At Charter Oak Endodontics, you will receive a thorough examination to determine the source of your problem. Through visual inspection, a discussion about the problem along with a clinical examination, Dr. Griffin will determine if the tooth requires endodontic care.

Root Canal Treatment

The removal of inflamed and/or infected pulp tissue (nerves and blood vessels) inside of the tooth. The inside of the tooth is cleaned, shaped and then filled. Afterward, the tooth is ready for the restoration.

Retreatment

Teeth with previous root canal treatment can become reinfected with bacteria. Some situations which require retreatment are root canal treated tooth without a permanent restoration or a root canal treated tooth that becomes decayed (has a cavity). The previous root canal material is removed. The tooth is then ready to be cleaned, shaped and filled.

Pulpotomy

The removal of infected portions of the pulp tissue. This procedure can prevent the immediate need for root canal treatment. It is most often performed on teeth with immature roots.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected.

Root canal procedures are performed when the nerve of the tooth becomes infected or the pulp becomes damaged. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Root canal procedures have the belief of being very painful. In reality most people report that the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed. The discomfort felt in the period leading up to the dental care is usually the most painful period of time, not the root canal procedure itself.

Will it Hurt to Have a Root Canal?

Root Canals are believed to be painful. If you have had dental treatment before, you know what to expect. If not, you will feel a sharp pinch at the beginning followed by a warm, tingly sensation of the anesthetic flowing into the injection site.

The key to a pain free root canal begins with the anesthesia. The current local anesthetics used work really well to prevent pain. Just today, I had a patient snoring in my chair.
